About Nyungwe

Often called the "Primate's World" due to its rich population of chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, which make it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The park's diverse terrain, with its mountains, valleys, and swamps, is a habitat for numerous species. While trekking for chimps or monkeys can be challenging and require long hours of hiking, the reward of seeing these primates in their natural habitat is well worth the effort.

Activities in Nyungwe

Chimpanzee Trekking

This is the most popular activity in the park. You'll trek with a guide to find one of the habituated chimpanzee communities. The trek can be demanding, but offers a unique, face-to-face encounter.

Canopy Walk

Nyungwe is home to the first canopy walkway in East Africa. This 200-meter-long suspended metallic bridge hangs 50 meters above the forest floor, giving you a thrilling, "eagle's eye" view of the canopy.

Colobus Monkey Trekking

Nyungwe is famous for its large troops of Rwenzori colobus monkeys, which can number up to 200 or 300 individuals. This trek offers a great chance to see these monkeys and other primate species like L'Hoest's and blue monkeys.

Hiking and Nature Walks

The park has a wide network of over 13 hiking trails, ranging from short walks to multi-day treks. These walks lead to beautiful waterfalls and offer opportunities to see various birds and plants.
